For Schools

CERN @ school project FAQs

Schools have access to research grade radiation and particle detectors based on technology from CERN. The devices are available to schools for a 6 week loan period. During this time it can be used to support the teaching of radiation and particle physics. Students can also use the equipment to carry out their own investigations.

The main physics topics that the project links to are radiation, particle physics and special relativity.

You can find out more by watching the films on our YouTube channel.

A users’ guide and starter experiments are available via our project page.

You can access our data analysis platform here. Examples of previous work can be accessed via our dataserver.

No, you can carry out demonstrations and research projects using background radiation or simple items such as lo-salt (potassium chloride).

The detector is portable. It is fragile, so please treat it with care. However, we are very happy for the detector to be used outside responsibly.
