Becky Parker

Founder
Becky Parker

After a physics degree and research at the University of Chicago, Becky taught in a variety of schools and was Senior Lecturer in physics at the University of Kent. Becky was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2008 and received Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Physics in 2014. She is Visiting Professor, School of Physics and Astronomy, Queen Mary University of London. Becky founded IRIS in early 2016 and then in the summer was awarded the Kavli Education Medal from the Royal Society. Becky will be returning to teaching full time from September 2019 but continues to be part of IRIS’ work as Founder. She is frequently seen at the side of reservoirs supporting her daughter who sails. She loves music and plays the bassoon.

Steve Greenwood

Steve Greenwood

Steve has had a long career in management running large scale operations in the UK and across Europe. Until recently he was the Chair of Governors at a primary school in Essex, and has spent a number of years actively involved in junior and youth sailing in the UK at local, regional and national level.

Laura Thomas

Director of Research
Laura Thomas

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Laura completed an MPhys in Astrophysics before going on to work in outreach in Higher Education. Her work includes resource development, classroom activities for students aged 5-18 and she regularly leads continuing professional development sessions for primary and secondary teachers. Laura is a keen cyclist and recently took part in her first triathlon.

Mike Grocott

Mike Grocott

Mike graduated from Exeter University and entered teaching after a career in the Royal Navy. Mike was the Physics AST in Cornwall, started the Callington Space Centre and more recently was the founding Principal of Space Studio Banbury, Mike has been nominated for the Arthur Clarke award for Space education three times, successfully winning it in 2016. Mike also works for National Space Academy as a lead educator, alongside working for European Space Education Resource Office.

Lizzie Rushton

Dr Lizzie Rushton

Lizzie has degrees in Music (King’s College, London) and Geography (Oxford Brookes University) and completed her Masters degree in Environmental History and her PhD in Geography at the University of Nottingham. A qualified teacher, she has taught Geography to undergraduates and students aged 11-18. Until 2016, Lizzie was Director of Research in a secondary school where she then joined IRIS to lead on Evaluation. Lizzie has returned to academia as a researcher based in the Department of Education, Communication and Society at Kings College London but continues to support IRIS’ evaluation on a consultancy basis and also continues in her role as an Honorary Senior Research Associate at UCL Institute of Education. Lizzie loves exploring Northumberland and running with her springer spaniel, Ginny.

Laura Tyzack

Laura Tyzack

Laura completed her BSc (Hons) Physics at the University of Edinburgh and then her MSc Medical Physics at the University of Surrey. She then moved into professional services at the University of London International Academy and Imperial College London to undertake a breadth of roles in quality assurance, governance, academic project management and business management. She enjoys the outdoors and visiting new places with her husband and two young children.

Clare Turnbull

Clare Turnbull

Clare has a BA (hons) in French and Philosophy from the University of Birmingham, and in 2018 completed an MSC in Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University. Clare was formerly a principal researcher for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. In recent years she has worked in assessing and supporting high school students with learning difficulties, and has been a member of the British Psychological Society since 2016. Clare was a secondary school governor from 2013-2016.
