Every great discovery starts with a question. By bringing research into the classroom, you can inspire curiosity, nurture creativity and empower young people to explore the world around them in new ways.

Build a culture of research

The UK’s future in science and technology depends on
young people who are curious, confident and ready to solve real-world problems.

Getting Started with Research helps teachers create meaningful opportunities for students to engage with authentic research and innovation. Free, flexible and designed to complement existing teaching, these resources support you to build a culture of research in any classroom in the UK.

“Every young person deserves the chance to ask real questions, follow evidence and discover that their ideas can contribute to something bigger than themselves.”

What’s included?

By signing up, teachers will gain access to a free, fully resourced scheme of work with everything needed to deliver engaging, meaningful research experiences in the classroom. The resources are designed to inspire young people, support teachers and fit alongside existing teaching practices and curriculum guidance.

Included in the resources are lesson plans, activities and powerpoint presentations. We’ve designed these lessons to be taught sequentially, but teachers can adapt the sequence, or select individual lessons, building towards a ‘Ready to Research’ mini project.

Students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills while gaining first-hand experience of how research can make a difference.

For many young people, taking part in research at school can build confidence, open doors to future opportunities and spark an interest in STEM careers. In fact, 77% of students who took part in an IRIS student research project in 2026 told us they felt more confident in their abilities in STEM.
